Introduced in 1944, it weighed over 68 tons, had an 88 mm gun and up to 180 mm of armor, making it virtually indestructible. Although fearsome, it was expensive, complex and prone to breakdowns. It was a symbol of both the power and desperation of the Third Reich. Exhibit from The Tank Museum in Bovington The Tiger II, with turret number 104, was built in July 1944 at the Henschel works. It served with the 1st Company of the 101st SS Panzer Battalion, and its commander was Oberscharführer Sepp Franzl. The tank was abandoned near Beauvais in late August 1944, likely after being fired upon by a Sherman tank from the 23rd Hussar Regiment.
