Unlike the standard BTR-50P at the time, the BMP-1 was equipped not only with a machine gun, but also with a cannon and a launcher for anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM). The BMP-1 became a widely exported vehicle and for decades formed the backbone of many mechanized formations. In addition to the USSR, licenses for its production were purchased by Czechoslovakia and Romania.
