Its combination of simplicity, functionality and style quickly established it as one of the most recognizable convertibles of the 1980s. The model was based on a design by the Italdesign studio, giving it a timeless, harmonious silhouette. Production of the convertible version was handled by Karmann—a company renowned for its decades of experience in building convertibles. One of its most distinctive features was the roll bar; initially controversial, it eventually became a signature trademark of the model while simultaneously enhancing driving safety. The Golf Cabriolet remained in production until 1993, earning its status as one of the longest-produced and most iconic convertibles of its era.
